Centring Prayer ( I've retained the U.S. spelling) is a form of contemplative prayer developed by Fr Thomas Keating in the 1960s. He developed the work of Contemplative Outreach, a worldwide organisation set up simply to encourage the contemplative practive of centring prayer. Cynthia Bourgeault and Fr Richard Rohr OFM also teach this method. In fact its roots go back, at least, to the author of the 14th century mystical writing The Cloud of Unknowing who describes the centring prayer practice. But in fact silent, contemplative, prayer, goes back to the earliest Christians in the desert of Egypt in the 4th century, and, I would argue, to Jesus himself in the Gospel accounts.
