Revelations of Divine Love

The First of 16 Showings... Chapters 1- 9

Chapter 5

At this same time our Lord shewed me the spiritual sight of his homely loving.

I saw that he is to us everything that is good and comfortable for us:

he is our clothing that for love wraps us, clasps us,

and all-encompasses us for tender love,

for he shall never leave us;

being to us everything that is good,

- this is my understanding.

Also in this he shewed me a little thing,

the size of a hazelnut,
in the palm of my hand;

and it was as round as a ball.

I looked at it with the eye of my understanding,

and thought: What can this be?

The answer gathers everything up: it is all that is made.

I marvelled how it might last,

for I thought it might

suddenly have fallen to nothingness for its littleness.

And I was answered in my understanding:

It lasts, and ever shall last because God loves it.

the second is that God loves it,

the third, that God keeps it.

And so it is with all things that have Being by the love of God.

In this little thing I saw three properties.

The first is that God made it,

the second is that God loves it,

the third, that God keeps it.

But how can I truly know in myself

the Maker, the Keeper, and the Lover?

This I cannot tell;

for till I am substantially Oned to him,

I may never have full rest nor true bliss:

that is to say, till I am so fastened to him,

that there is absolutely nothing that is made

between my God and me.

God, of your Goodness, give me yourself:

for you are enough for me,

and may I ask nothing less

than that which gives you full worship;

and if I ask anything that is less,

I will always be wanting more

but only in you I have all.

Chapter 6

For the Goodness of God is the highest prayer, and it condescends to the lowest part of our need. It quickens our soul and brings it to life, and makes it grow in grace and virtue.

It is, of its nature, close to us; and readiest in grace: for it is the same grace that the soul seeks, and ever shall seek till we know truly that He has enclosed us all in Himself..

For He has no contempt of that which he has made, nor does he disdain to serve us at the lowest place that to our body belongs to in nature, and this for love of the soul that he has made to his own likeness.

For as the body is clad in the cloth, and the flesh in the skin, and the bones in the flesh, and the heart in the whole, so are we, soul and body, clad in the Goodness of God, and enclosed.

Yes, and this is homely: for all these may waste and wear away, but the Goodness of God is ever whole; and more near to us, without any equal;

for truly our Lover desires that our soul cleaves to him with all its might, and that we for ever cleave to his Goodness. For of all things that the heart may think, this pleases our most high God, and most quickly speeds the soul on its way.

For our soul is so specially loved of him that is highest, that it is beyond the knowing of any creature: that is to say, there is no creature that is made that may know how much and how sweetly and how tenderly our Maker loves us.

And therefore we may, with grace and his help, stand in spiritual beholding, with an everlasting marvel of this high, overpassing, inestimable Love that Almighty God has for us of his Goodness. And therefore we may ask of our Lover, with reverence, all that we will.

Chapter 8

For as long as I saw the sight of the plenteous bleeding of the Head I might never cease from these words: Benedicite Domine! (Blessed be the Lord)

In this Showing I understood six things:–

the tokens of the blessed Passion and the plenteous shedding of His precious blood.
the Maiden that is His precious Mother.
the blissful Godhead that ever was, is, and ever shall be: Almighty, All-Wisdom, All-Love.
everything that He has made. – For well I know that heaven and earth and all that is made is great and large, fair and good; but the reason why it seemed so little to my sight was that I saw it in the presence of Him that is the Maker of all things: for to a soul that sees the Maker of all, all that is made seems so very little.
He that made all things for love, by the same love keeps them, and shall keep them without end.
that God is all that is good, as I see it, and the goodness that each thing has, it is He.

Chapter 9

I speak of them that shall be saved, for at this time God showed me no other.

But in all things I believe as Holy Church believes, preaches, and teaches.

For the Faith of Holy Church, which I had understood before these Showings, I hope, by the grace of God, to have earnestly kept in my actions and my disposition. These teachings stood clearly before me.

My will and my meaning was never to receive anything that might be contrary to this teaching. And with this intention I beheld the Showing with loving delight: for this blessed Showing, as I beheld it, and the teaching of Holy Church, are as one in God's meaning.
